Sex, Lies, & Technology: Why is Everyone So Afraid of MySpace?

New technologies always bring new moral panics, and there are a *lot* of people panicking these days over computer technologies: Sexual predators on MySpace!  Porn on the 'Net!  Sex and Violence in video games!  Like most moral panics, these are causing those in power to overreach and do things that very likely violate the First Amendment, like suspending kids for what they say on their personal blog, trying to criminalize sexual speech online, and introducing bills to regulate video game content.  Come hear from Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney Kevin Bankston, who will give you the facts,  explain the law, and tell you how you can fight for your digital freedoms in the face of nervous parents, unreasonable teachers and publicity-seeking lawmakers.

Government Surveillance:

How the NSA 0wnz0red the 'Net

The National Security Agency, with the cooperation of AT&T and others, now has a back door into the major telecommunications companies' networks and databases.  That means the government has unchecked access to the private communications and phone records of nearly every American.  Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney Kevin Bankston is one of the lawyers fighting to stop this illegal domestic spying, representing AT&T customers in a lawsuit against the telecom giant for its illegal collaboration with the government.  In this session, he'll lay out the law and technology of the NSA surveillance program and explain what Congress and the courts are (or aren't) doing about it.  He'll also discuss several other new troubling trends in government surveillance -- cell phones, your search history, and ISP record retention -- and give practical and political advice about how you can protect your privacy

The Wikipedia Effect

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia built by its readers. In five years it went from nothing to having about a million articles in English and nearly two million spread across more than 100 other languages. While coverage and quality vary widely, many articles are comparable in quality to those in long-established commercial alternatives. Yet the traditional safeguards of vetting content prior to publication are not only absent but replaced by a radical form of peer review where anyone can edit and add content. A brief history of the project, its software, and the community will be presented as well as an introduction to what the Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that runs Wikipedia, plans to do in the future to improve the project and its product.
